Gmail celebrates 15 years with new features

Gmail for desktop computers launched 15 years ago on April 1, 2004. It was a different technology world back then. Smartphones didn’t exist (first iPhone 2007, first Android 2008). Many of the features that we now take for granted had not yet been conceived. Spam email was just taking off. Gmail has changed a lot since then, and is rolling out some long-awaited features in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Here then is a list of some of the changes you can expect.

Dynamic email

Dynamic email means you can do more in an email message without having to open additional browser tabs or apps. Dynamic email is already tied (of course) to Google Docs and other Drive apps. You can, for instance, respond to notifications and updates to your connected Docs from within an email and save yourself a few steps.

Other major websites, like Booking.com, Despegar, Doodle, Ecwid, Freshworks, Nexxt, OYO Rooms, Pinterest and redBus are already using dynamic email meaning you can take action on their emails with a click, never leaving the email app. Look for dynamic emails in your Gmail inbox soon.

Smart compose

Smart compose takes Gmail’s existing Smart Reply to the next level by incorporating AI (artificial intelligence). Now it’s coming to Android and iPhone. Smart compose will suggest greetings, salutations, and sentences as you type. Just hit Tab to accept a suggestion you like.

Smart compose is getting smarter too. It can now customize greetings and even suggest subject lines.

Scheduled email

Writing an weekend email but don’t want it sent until Monday? Gmail is adding a scheduling feature that will allow you to do just that. This is great for reminders too!
